What is Microneedling?
Collagen Induction Therapy (more commonly known as Micro-needling) is an
advanced treatment that is done using a pen-like device with detachable,
disposable sterile needle heads. The tiny needles contained in these attachments are used to pierce the skin, with the depth of piercing ranging from superficial
epidermis to papillary dermis.
The penetration of the micro-needles into the epidermal layer of the skin creates
numerous micro-injuries, stimulating the fibroblast cells to increase collagen
production. Although results are visible within 10 days, it takes around 3 months
for the newly produced collagen fibres to mature. Upon maturation, these fibres
contract, thereby creating the firmer, plumper appearance.

Microneedling can be done on any Fitzpatrick skin type (Skin tone scale types 1-6)
How to prepare your skin prior to microneedling:
Stop the application of any Vitamin A-containing ointments on the area to be
treated 2 weeks prior to and 2 weeks after the treatment. Any retinol (Vitamin
A)/AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) containing creams must be stopped 3 days prior to
treatment.
Refrain from taking any painkillers or anti-inflammatories on the day of
treatment. Inform your therapist of any change in medication or
supplementation.
Do not sun tan or use a tanning bed 2-4 weeks prior to, and 2-4 weeks post
treatment. Inform your therapist of any recent sun burn in the last week.
Stop any type of depilatory treatments (waxing, depilatory creams) to the area of
treatment, 2 weeks prior to and 2 weeks after treatment. Stop electrolysis, and
any type of laser treatments (laser hair removal, IPL) to the area of treatment, 2
weeks before and 2 weeks after your treatment.
What to expect After Microneedling/Post-care:
Redness and possible swelling
A sunburnt feeling
A rough skin texture around day 3-5
Some flaking or peeling may occur 1-5 days after treatment
A slight itching can be felt in the hours after treatment; if itching is persistent an
antihistamine may be taken.
Depending on the depth of treatment selected, the after effect iis similar to
mild-to-moderate sunburn. With the correct after-care products, the 'down-time'
is limited to 6-12 hours. During this time, it is important to avoid any sun
exposure.
Make-up application is permitted after12 hours.
